How Should Children’s Tap Shoes Fit?
Tap shoes should fit closely and securely without squeezing. Your child’s toes should lie naturally and flat inside the shoe, while the back should hold the heel securely when walking and tapping.
Always measure your child’s feet rather than using their current everyday shoe size. School shoes and trainers often already contain growing room, making them an unreliable starting point for fitted dance footwear.

Choose a secure fit without excessive growing room.
Try the shoes with the same socks or tights your child will wear for class. Shoes that are too large may slide around the foot, reducing control and making it more difficult to create a clean tap sound.
Quick fit check: Ask your child to walk, rise onto the toes and perform a few gentle toe-and-heel movements. The toes should remain flat and the heel should not noticeably lift or slide.
